Be the Light

Blog – 8-28-19

As I write this blog, I am busy preparing for the Women of Faith “Be the Light” event coming up September 6 and 7 in Lincoln, Nebraska. I am thrilled to be speaking and leading worship at the event. Tickets are still available, and I would love to see you there! As I reflect on what it means to be the light for Christ, I can’t help but reflect on the power of light. Think about it, the smallest light can make a huge difference in our lives. I know I truly appreciate the tiny, little nightlight that helps me find my way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, especially if I’m staying somewhere new. That tiny light saves me from bumping into all kinds of hazards! I also think about the power of a single candle in the middle of a storm when the power goes out. It helps me feel secure and safe from the darkness that surrounds me. There is also intense physical power found in extremely focused light. The rays of the sun are intense, but when you focus that light through a magnifying glass, you can actually start things on fire. And then there’s the laser, which is simply focused light. This focused light is so powerful it can actually cut through metal and even destroy cancer. Light, something powerful, something beautiful, something that offers comfort when we are surrounded by darkness. The Bible has some pretty interesting things to say about light. In Matthew, Jesus tells us that we, you and me, are actually light: “You are the light of the world……let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV) Woah, those are pretty strong words when you stop and think about what it’s really saying. Jesus tells us that we are light. Little old you and little old me are the light of the world. He challenges each and every one of us to claim that light, to be the light, and let our light shine in order to glorify God. The best way our light shines, the most powerful way our light shines, is when we are focused. Just like light gains physical power when it is focused, our lives are the most effective when we focus them. When we know why we were created and we live out that purpose with laser focus, that’s when we can truly change the world! Unfortunately, so many of us don’t have a clue why we are here. Our light is diffused. Our light is dim. We don’t know what God created us for, so we drift around in the dark, bumping into things in the night. We get distracted easily because we don’t even know the path God wants us to be on.

The world misses out when our lights don’t shine as bright as they could because we don’t believe we have much to share. But when our priorities are in line with His will for us, when we approach life with a laser focus, that’s when others can’t help but see the power of God working in and through us. That’s when we can be the brightest light and make a difference in the world for HIM! Discovering and living out our purpose isn’t just a good idea. It isn’t just meant for the “chosen few.” I believe that discovering and stepping into our purpose is THE reason God put us here on earth. It’s what enables us to shine brighter and brighter for Him.

Our ultimate purpose is to serve Him, and that looks different for each of us. My challenge to you is to ask yourself some hard questions: Is my light shining bright for Jesus? Is it diffused because I don’t know my purpose? How can I brighten that light so others will see Jesus in me? If you need some help finding and stepping into your purpose, I would be honored to come alongside you and assist you. My new online course might be perfect for you. You can find out more details by clicking the link below. Wherever you are on your journey, my friend, whether you feel like a laser or a tiny, little nightlight, remember that Jesus is calling you to let your light shine! You  have the power within you to shine and Be the Light that brings others to Christ! Hugs and love, Jill
