Bird Song

I’ve really struggled with writing my blog this week. I have started three different times and gone three different directions, but none of them spoke to me, so I knew they probably weren’t going to speak to you either!
I decided to change things up and take my computer outside. It’s a beautiful summer evening, and so I took my place in my favorite seat and closed my eyes, praying for inspiration. With my eyes closed, I began to notice something very inspiring and beautiful.
The birds all around me were singing an incredible song. There are random notes coming at me from every direction, some high, some low, some soft, some extremely loud, but they make a beautiful melody as they all come together. It sounds like pure joy!
I started to wonder, who are they singing for? Themselves? Predators? Other birds? Their mate? I’m not sure. My husband John’s mom used to tell him that she believed birds were singing a song of love. She told him they were singing to their mates because their time on earth is very short and the time they spend together is precious. Sounds exactly like something John’s sweet mother would have said.
I did a little research on why birds sing, and I found out John’s mom was right, they are singing to their mate. Studies have shown that songs play a crucial role in attracting and impressing potential mates and may signal the overall health of the singer. I also learned singing can be very draining for our feathered friends. I can relate! Evidence also suggests that the main reason they sing is to proclaim and defend their territories.
These facts are very interesting and I’m sure the research is right on, but tonight I’m choosing to believe they are singing for God. Their compelling melody sounds like a celebration of His creation and the gift of another day.
I believe birds are God’s choir. click to tweet
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. Psalm 96:1-3
Their rhapsody of praise sounds to me like Psalm 96 in action. It moves me. It makes me smile. I feel God’s presence as I listen. It truly calms my soul as I get lost in the melody, that deep kind of calm that only comes when we lose ourselves in the wonder of God’s creation. I feel total awe and amazement as I realize that God loved us enough to make the world we live in so beautiful and gave us so many things to enjoy.
Like the simplicity of a bird’s song.
Tomorrow will be another crazy day of trying to fit everything into a day that’s way too full, but right here, right now, I’m enjoying the song of God’s choir. I hope you take some time out from your hectic schedule and do the same!
Hugs and love,
~Jill
