Ghostbusters
The remake of Ghostbusters is out in theaters now. I haven’t gone yet, not sure I will, but I do remember the original movie. Bill Murray is one of my favorites, and he always makes me laugh. It was very entertaining watching Murray and the other “paranormal specialists” go to battle with ghosts and try to capture them in their ghost traps, getting slimed along the way. See a ghost, who you gonna call, Ghostbusters! Hopefully the great theme song is rolling around in your brain right now!
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, I think most of us live with ghosts…the ghosts of yesterday’s sins. Sins you’ve laid down at the cross; mistakes in judgment you’ve repented of; damage you’ve done your best to move beyond…
The time you erupted in anger.
The horrible lie you told.
The time you gave in to temptation and did something you regret.
These ghosts settle deep in our souls and love to rattle their chains to get us going again. They try to haunt us and make us believe that God’s grace doesn’t really cover something like THAT. They whisper words of condemnation.
I know you’re like me. You remember. You rehash your mistakes. You relive them. You are haunted by them.
Just like the ghosts in the movie Ghostbusters caused all kinds of mayhem and tried to take over the world, the ghosts that live in the cellars of our soul try to wreak havoc in us and undermine the freedom we have in Christ. They are bent on destroying our lives by undermining God’s truth.
We need a reminder of God’s forgiving nature. We need to remember that God doesn’t remember…but forgets! We need to celebrate that “The old is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Cor. 5:17 NLT)
Let me ask you, do you think God was exaggerating when He said, “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” (Psalm 103:12 NLT.)? Do you think a God that loved us enough to sacrifice His one and only son for us would really remember every regret, every mistake, every misstep we’ve ever made and then try to rub our noses in our mistakes? Absolutely not!
The Bible is truth, and it tells us very clearly God doesn’t remember our sins. We have to fight the urge to beat ourselves up about our mistakes. There is absolutely no way to change our past; the only thing we can do is try to move forward and love God to the best of our ability…TODAY!

The next time you hear apparitions from your past start rattling their chains and trying to spook you into believing God is keeping a list of your mistakes, tell them to go away! Stand up to them and remind yourself who you really are, a new creation in Christ.
Call the Ghostbusters and blast those ghosts to smithereens!
