Settle My Heart
Blog – 12-12-18
I am thrilled to release a brand new song called Settle My Heart. I believe this is a song for right now, especially during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. It’s one of those things that honestly has God’s fingerprints all over it, and I feel incredibly honored that I got to be a part of it.
So here’s the story: I wrote the song back in April with my great friend and co-writer, Rachel Barrentine, while I was in Nashville. We were having a conversation after dinner, and I shared with her these exact words, “I just feel so unsettled.”
She stopped me in my tracks and said, “You’ve got to hear this chorus I started. I believe you’re the one I’m supposed to write this song with.” We went to the piano and she sang the chorus, and it moved me to tears. We knew this was a Holy Spirit moment, and we worked on the song right then and there for a couple of hours to complete it.
Here is what Rachel wrote in her blog about how God gave her the idea for the song:
One morning as I was standing in front of the mirror getting ready I could feel anxiety all through my body. My pulse was up, my head was foggy, and my insides felt jittery. My life this past year (2018) has taken a different turn than I anticipated. It’s a good turn, but change, even good change, increases stress levels. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I heard that gentle whisper of the Holy Spirit say, “Rachel, ask Me to settle your heart.” So I whispered those words back to God, “Lord, settle my heart. Settle my heart.” Right in that moment I began to hear the music to this phrase. It was just what my unsettled heart needed. As I spoke and sang those words, my heart literally began to settle.
And that’s what this song is all about, helping us settle in the midst of the chaos. Helping us focus on God’s love and grace instead of the craziness around us.
As we have played this song out, the response has truly been overwhelming. Honestly, I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. Tears have flowed, and people have flocked to my merchandise table asking for the song. It took longer than we hoped to get it recorded, but it was worth the wait. Rachel recorded it in her studio, Anchor Studios, and Jimmy Nichols added some beautiful strings to it.
People I have shared it with have been listening to this song to start their quiet time with God, to start their day, to settle their spirits when they’re feeling overwhelmed.
PLEASE take a minute to let this song wash over you. The buttons below will get you to the song. Rachel and I hope and pray that it settles your heart over and over in the midst of this beautiful yet often frantic holiday season.
Hugs and love,
Jill
