Where Our Treasure Is
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21
I recently went to Trinity Heights for my time of solitude and silence. It was a beautiful summer day, not too hot, not too cold, and God and I had a sweet time together. There were some ministry things that I was wrestling with, as well as a few personal items on my heart. I suddenly found myself holding my Bible to my chest, hugging it like a baby.
I have a Bible that has gold-edged pages, and when I looked down, the sun was hitting it at just the right angle, and the glare was blinding. The gold edges were shining brilliantly in the sun. It was absolutely beautiful! God instantly brought to my thoughts the fact that this book and these pages with the gold edges are where my treasure is. True, lasting treasure that is. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
I know God’s word needs to be close to my heart, and physically holding the Bible to my chest gave me a visible picture of that. Sometimes I need those physical reminders to help me break through my mental barriers! How wonderful to think that I was sitting there asking God to show me where to find answers to my questions as I was hugging my Bible, my treasure, with all my might. God is good!
A treasure is something valued and of great worth. We tend to think of things like gold, diamonds, houses, cars, earthly things when we think about treasure. Yet when I think about what I needed that day, it had absolutely nothing to do with any of those things. I simply needed to feel God’s hand in my life and know that He was present with me in the midst of my struggles. I needed His direction and guidance. I needed His treasure, His word, stored up in my heart.
Today God brought me to another verse about treasure. It’s found in Proverbs 2:1-5. It says:
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”
Proverbs 2:1-5 (NIV – emphasis added)
I couldn’t help but focus on two key lines, the ones where it tells us to “call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding.” Have I ever really called out to God for those very important things? Would He answer me if I did? Could it really be that simple?
I love how the verse then goes on to say we have to “search for it as for hidden treasure.” In other words, we can’t sit back and expect God to just plop answers down on us. It’s up to us to read His word, listen for His promptings, spend time with Him, and seek His will with every ounce of our being, as if we were looking for a hidden treasure. I can’t help but think about people in the gold rush days that raced to faraway places like California and Alaska to find gold. They left homes, families, everything they had to look for treasure. Many of them faced incredible hardships and even died along the way; but they were willing to risk it all and were unstoppable in their resolve to find it.
Oh, but that we would approach God’s truth with that same sense of urgency! I pray that we would have that same resolve deep inside of us to find the treasure hidden in God’s word.
Heavenly Father, help us remember that where we place our value and our time is where our treasure is. Help us call out to You for insight and cry aloud for Your understanding, knowing that where our treasure is, our heart will be also. Amen.
