Blog – 12-2-15 King of Kings
First of all, a very heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out for my CD release concert last Saturday night. What a wonderful night as we raised money for a great cause and celebrated the King of Kings! Also, congratulations to Marcia Cruz, the winner of the iPad mini!
For the month of December, I would like to focus on the lyrics to the chorus of the title track, “King of Kings.” I’ve included a link at the bottom of this blog so you can listen to the song. The lyrics say:
King of Kings, Emmanuel Holy One of Israel Prince of Peace, the Blessed Lamb Born to wash away all the sins of man Let us join the angels as they sing Hallelujah, hallelujah, King of Kings
Out of all the names that we can call God, King of Kings is a name that is full of strength, power, and majesty. It means that, in the end, all other rulers will be conquered and defeated, and He alone will reign as king of all the earth! There is no power and no authority that can ever oppose Him and win.
This is also the name the Bible tells us He will be wearing when He returns. It will actually be tattooed on his thigh according to Revelation 19:16 which says, “On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” This name is obviously important!
As human beings, we naturally want leadership. In the Old Testament, the Israelites begged for a king. In 1 Samuel 8:6 they said, “Give us a king to lead us.” We have an inborn desire to have someone in authority and power over us. We may fight this authority at times, but it’s what we need to feel safe and secure. It’s like a child who may fight rules and boundaries, but when they are given too much freedom, their world quickly becomes chaos. Studies have proven that children thrive when there is structure and order in their lives, when they know someone is in control. We never outgrow that need for authority.
As much as we desire and need that authority, however, we can never truly understand the magnitude of who God really is, so we have to rely on faith. God lives in “light so brilliant that no human can approach him,” 1 Timothy 6:16. It’s only through total and complete surrender that we can trust in something we don’t completely understand.
I think about the many times I’ve behaved like a child with God and tried to resist His authority over me, times when I’ve tried to do things on my own, apart from His perfect will for me. It never ends well, just like it didn’t when I rebelled against my parents as a child. I smile a bit to myself as I think about how I thought my parents were “so strict.” It seemed like all the other kids could do things I couldn’t (what child hasn’t felt that, right!). But I smile even more as I think about how grateful I am that I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that my parents loved me. They gave me boundaries because they cared so much and wanted to protect me. They would do anything in their power to keep me safe. It’s exactly the same way with my Heavenly Father.
My prayer is that we can learn to trust more and more in God’s authority so we can lean into the truth that God’s boundaries are good for us. They keep us safe. They provide the stability and the order we need to thrive. They are meant for our good. When we realize there’s nothing we can do in our own strength, we can finally come to a point where we rely totally and completely on the power of our King of Kings. And that’s a good place to be!
